Solve area problems

Directions: Solve the word problems from the homework sheet shown above. Show your work and include square units. Type your answers or use the microphone, then save them. Tap the small “ans” link under a problem to check your answer.

Area tells how much flat space is inside a shape. For a rectangle, multiply the length by the width.

The homework problems

1. Curtis is cleaning out a pool. The model has 7 rows with 5 equal squares in each row. Each square represents 1 square foot. What is the area of the pool? Choose A: 21 square feet, B: 35 square feet, or C: 49 square feet.

ans

B. 35 square feet. Multiply 7 rows by 5 squares in each row: 7 × 5 = 35.

2. Harry is putting a fence around his doghouse. The rectangular area is less than 32 square meters. One side measures 5 meters. What is one possible area of the doghouse? Show two side lengths that work.

ans

One possible answer is 30 square meters. A rectangle measuring 5 meters by 6 meters has an area of 5 × 6 = 30 square meters, which is less than 32. Other side lengths can also work; there is no single correct area.

3. Lisa is starting a garden. The garden is labeled 7 feet by 6 feet. A bag of soil covers 50 square feet. Does she have enough soil for her garden? Explain your answer.

ans

Yes. Use the written labels: 7 × 6 = 42 square feet. The bag covers 50 square feet, so it is enough, with enough soil for 8 more square feet. The drawn grid does not match the labels.

4. Elizabeth wants new carpet for her dining room. The room measures 7 yards by 7 yards. How many square yards of carpet does she need?

Use a voice recording

ans

49 square yards. Multiply 7 yards by 7 yards: 7 × 7 = 49 square yards.

Your turn to write

Write 3–5 sentences explaining how you found the area of a rectangle. Use one problem as your example.

Words to practice on paper

Use a pencil and paper. Say each word, copy it three times, then cover it and try writing it once from memory. Check your spelling. Practice five words today and five next time.

Today: area, square, row, feet, yard.

Next time: length, width, garden, meter, carpet.

Choose two words and write one sentence with each.

Notes about the original sheet

The original worksheet is pictured above. Credit: It Takes A Village Learning Center. The typed questions fix small spelling and unit errors for clarity.

The doghouse question has more than one possible answer. Its area is measured in square meters, not meters.

The garden grid drawing does not match the written 7-foot by 6-foot labels. Use the written measurements for this question. The carpet question uses “dining room” and “living room” for the same room; this version calls it the dining room.
